Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 1/4 cups flour
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1 tablespoon cornstarch
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter (softened)
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 1 egg
  • 1/4 cup sour cream
  • 1 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1/4 teaspoon almond extract
  • 1/2 cup butter (softened)
  • 2 cups powdered sugar
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 2 tablespoons milk
  • orange & purple & green food coloring
  • halloween sprinkles

Instructions

  1. In a medium bowl, whisk together the flour, salt, baking powder, baking soda, and cornstarch. Set aside.
  2. In a large bowl, cream the softened butter and sugar using an electric mixer until light and fluffy for about 5 minutes.
  3. Mix in the egg, vanilla extract, and almond extract, then stir in the sour cream.
  4. Add the dry ingredients to the wet mixture and mix until just combined, avoiding overmixing.
  5. Shape the dough into a disk, wrap it in plastic wrap, and refrigerate for at least an hour to firm up.
  6. Preheat the oven to 375°F when ready to bake.
  7. Roll out the dough to about 1/4 inch thick and cut into circles using a 3-inch cookie cutter.
  8. Place the cookies on a parchment-lined baking sheet and bake for 8–9 minutes, ensuring they remain soft and not too golden.
  9. Allow the cookies to cool completely before frosting them.
  10. For the buttercream, beat the softened butter until fluffy, then add the powdered sugar and vanilla extract.
  11. Gradually add the milk until a smooth consistency is achieved, adjusting with a splash if necessary.
  12. Divide the frosting into three bowls and color each with food coloring as desired.
  13. Frost each cookie and top with Halloween sprinkles.

Notes

Chill the dough to ensure easy handling and soft cookies.
Use different colors of food dye to make the frosting visually appealing for Halloween.
Store cookies in an airtight container for freshness.
