These fluffy whole wheat waffles offer an irresistible flavor and simple prep, perfect for a quick breakfast or cozy brunch. Made with wholesome ingredients like buttermilk and brown sugar, they’re a tasty treat for all breakfast lovers.
Ingredients
Scale
- 2 cups (260g) whole wheat flour, spooned & leveled
- 1 tablespoon baking powder
- 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
- 1/4 teaspoon salt
- 6 tablespoons (85g) unsalted butter, melted and slightly cooled
- 2 large eggs, at room temperature
- 2 tablespoons (25g) packed light or dark brown sugar
- 1 and 3/4 cups (420g/ml) buttermilk
- 1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract
Instructions
- Preheat the waffle maker on medium-high heat and the oven to 200°F (93°C). Set a wire rack on a baking sheet aside.
- In a large bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, cinnamon, and salt. Set it aside.
- In another bowl, mix the melted butter, eggs, and brown sugar. Then add in the buttermilk and vanilla, whisking until combined. Combine the wet mixture with the dry ingredients, mixing gently to avoid over-mixing. Some small lumps may remain.
- Grease the preheated waffle maker. Pour about 1/3 cup of batter into each well and close the lid. Cook until crisp, which takes around 4–5 minutes (follow your waffle maker’s instructions). Keep the cooked waffles warm in the oven on the wire rack while cooking the remaining batter.
- Serve the waffles immediately with your favorite toppings.
Notes
For best results, use room temperature ingredients.
Feel free to add chocolate chips or fruits to the batter for extra flavor.
Store any leftover waffles in the refrigerator, and reheat in the toaster for a quick breakfast.
